Why We Make Art? A Study of Three Films.
As part of my new year resolution last year… I decided to work my way through 100 of the all time highly rated films, using letterboxd’s rating metrics. And honestly, it has been such a joy to go back and finally sit down and discover a whole wealth of film history that I had been putting off in favour of perhaps more light or less challenging entertainment. But this process of finding films from different cultures, from different moments in history, films with deep thematic arguments and thoroughly profound ideas have led me to appreciate this wider conversation around the power and meaning of the cinema itself. As a filmmaker myself, I think it is really important to understand this fundamental question… why make art in the first place?
I suppose what I want to understand is this ongoing process, this dance between life creating art, that in turns contributes to life… or in other words, people’s individual experiences that cause them to create these ideas, these essays, which in turns not only enriches to their own experiences, but also contributes to a wider audience and broader conversation…
